This special anniversary concert celebrates nearly 40 years of Yoko Shimomura’s musical journey, honoring the unforgettable melodies she has created for generations of listeners around the world.
The concert will be conducted by Grammy Award-winning conductor Arnie Roth, known for his work on many game music concerts, including Distant Worlds: music from FINAL FANTASY. The performance will feature the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra and will be held at Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre on September 25.
Through the grandeur of a full orchestra, these iconic melodies will bring cherished scenes vividly back to life, delivering an evening of joy, nostalgia, and deep emotion.
ABOUT YOKO SHIMOMURA
Yoko Shimomura graduated from the Department of Music (Piano) of the Department of Music, Osaka University of Music. After working for Capcom Co., Ltd. and Square Co., Ltd. (now Square Enix Co., Ltd.), she became independent freelance composer. She is now active internationally across a wide range of creative fields.
Her many celebrated works include Street Fighter II, Super Mario RPG, Legend of Mana, the Kingdom Hearts series, FINAL FANTASY XV. She is widely regarded as one of the more important and representative composers in the history of game music.
Shimomura’s music spans a broad range of styles, from rhythmically driven pieces to grand orchestral works. She is especially known for her delicate and emotional melodies and dramatic music expression. Her music is beloved by audiences across countries and generations, and is performed at concerts and events around the world.
In recent years, Shimomura has expanded her work beyond composition to include lyrics and production, continuing to contribute to games, animation, and visual media. Her achievements over more than 30 years, along with her significant contributions to game music culture, have earned her international recognition. In 2024, she received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Game Developers Choice Awards. In 2025, she became the first game music composer to receive the BAFTA Fellowship, the highest honor awarded by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts.
